[Current Mood | relieved]
[Current Music |Michael Buble - Georgia on my mind]

4 more days. Anticipation, excitement, coupled with a lil stress. Thats the way to sum it up. Things havent really gone great this year, but i hope as we close in to the end of the year, things do pick up. Its the final lap after all, i hope that all my efforts do pay off. In this phase of madness, i did have fun studying with my friends. 3d2n stay at the sail with kewei and the rest was enjoyable, as well as all the studying sessions with andrew and other xms friends.

Today also marks the end of our tuition lessons with David. In all honesty, he is a very practical person ( always talks about opportunity cost and applying it to himself ahaha) , but he is real passionate about economics. And to a certain extent, it did motivate and inspire me to do well in this subject. For all i know i may even take this subject in uni. But, the whole point is just that he's a good teacher. Constantly cracks jokes without knowing, using analogies that really crack us up. The best part is he mispronounces a lot of word, but speaks with such conviction that i emulate him sometimes ahahaha. Words such as olibocoly ( oligopoly ) and shupahnormal profits. And then i saw the advert a couple of days ago, talking about how a teacher's influence can be felt throughout your life. This, is damn true. I still remember a lot of my stuffs that my ex teachers used to talk about. The days of wearing school uniform is coming to an endddddd.

And just about an hour ago, i was walking home from the bus stop, after studying with jianxiang. Was at the traffic junction, waiting for the green man to appear, suddenly this taxi which wanted to turn right, made a u-turn cause this fucktard dashed pass, even though it was still red light. So the taxi swerve, right in front of me, inches away. A near 360 degree turn. I was just fucking shocked beyond words and i didnt know how to react. The first thing that came to my mind was to confront the driver and give him a kick in the gut, but then again i felt so thankful i wasnt knocked down so i just walked away. The taxi driver, however, did went on to confront the man, in the middle of the road. Prolly did give him a combo of hokkien vulgarities at the least. Y'know, people always say, you dont know how it feels like unless you're in that situation. Its true, cause i really felt intense fear at that moment, and my leg was trembling.

Times like these you really feel like "Thank god im alive." Oh, to end if off, i really need to say this. Just like how Frank Sinatra was magic in his era, so is Michael Buble. His voice is beyond sex, seriously, what a voice! All the emotions, pouring out.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest [Nov. 5th, 2009|01:15 pm]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. I just caught He's just not that into you like just now. It kinda reminds me of Closer somehow, but not so eerie. Still, I was surprisingly entertained by it, despite it having this weird storyline which revolves only around misreading human behaviour, and the signs women decipher about how men treat them. Which I must say, is, pretty hilarious, when it comes to the part when Alex says that if a man says he doesn't give a shizz about you, he really doesn't give a shizz about you. Much as women think they're playing hard to get. haha. Anyways, what the fuggles, yeah I just spent 2h catching a movie, and As are like next tuesday. fuggles!

Oh anyways, earlier in the afternoon, Nick was heating up his briyani in the microwave and I was like, "Nick you can't use that plate in the microwave, it is lined, there'd be sparks later."
And he went, "yeah like Boomz, and afterthat when there's a fire, I'd go Shingz."

omgwth! yes, that was Ris Low for you.

i've been going crazy looking for this ad online. i watched this two days ago (but that was the hindi version; the voiceover was in hindi) and i have no idea why this ad just got stuck in my head. it made so much sense (plus, i love sahil shroff- the male model in the ad) and the concept was pretty cute.

AND it seems hundreds of other people agree with me! O.M.G.

this is good marketing. MKT1003, i will not fail you.

Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC [Oct. 30th, 2009|05:17 pm]

lj_maintenance

[dwell]
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

ok. not a pretty end to my last french exam of six years.

1. MT is still tied with BW as i have just heard from chen yang sia (which also means ihc was not that exciting in terms of rankings haha) BUT THAT'S OKAY i ♥ the pREDator shirt anyway, and this year's house D will make sure next year's a good year. and i must say, job well done for ihc seeing as it was so last minute and only 4 days long haha.

but that was irrelevant. i shall start again

1. the first time i brought my jacket, and it was not cold at all.
2. invigilators who kept talking and opening the door.
3. the most stressful 5 minutes ever, my hand was almost uh, convulsing, and i think my handwriting is more or less undecipherable starting from third paragraph onwards. two minutes left to copy out the last sentence of my antithese and my conclusion, so i gave up two sentences. and i did not get to write the phrase i most wanted to write ):
4. sian mrt ride home with people i did not want to take the mrt with.

either way, last french exam of six years, and it still feels good being able to strike one subject off the schedule. and one grade decided too, please give me my A. i also realised that monday was the last time i'd be going to the MOELC haha, it's the only school i attended for six years.

so that's the end of french, no idea when i'll next be taking my dictionary off my shelf. dalf maybe. i realise i do still want to continue studying it, if i can! and i want a levels to end now.

alright keep going 3.5 subjects left!!

LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content! [Oct. 29th, 2009|10:53 am]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

Spotlight community of the week

i am so angry. as much as i do agree on that issue, i believe you of all people have not as much right to criticize on that issue! urgh. one day you will learn and understand for being such a person you are. i hope you don't have to learn it the hard way, but i would rather you learn it that way if you are never ever going to learn it at all.

this is not meant for anyone i know to comprehend, and don't ask me who i'm referring to. it's not you.

i am really annoyed because i have been missing out on things lately.

1. i missed tonight's ballet because my mother figured that i should be studying and not watching a ballet performance. but that's still not that bad.

2. LEE MIN HO was in raffles hotel on saturday night.

AND

I WAS IN RAFFLES HOTEL ON SATURDAY NIGHT

and this dude in the room i was in was saying that there was a korean singer or something outside and that there was a crowd of girls screaming (i actually typed singapore instead of singer, this is a sign that i have been doing many econs essays, i hope), and my jaw dropped :O but it did not occur to me that it might be anyone i knew so i stayed inside

SO, ARGH.

i was that close. and his hair in the life photo was pretty cute too

anyway, i need more table space, and more floor space would be nice too.
not a sign that i have been studying a lot, just a sign that i am a messy person despite my OCD.
i have revised my study schedule for the third time and i am determined to make this one work!!!

Here at LiveJournal, we never balk at an opportunity for high drama, wicked costumes, and gluttonous sugar consumption. But this community takes it one step further: Here, everyday is Halloween. Of course, the hallowed eve is particularly sacred to this spirited crowd. If you're looking for last-minute costume ideas for your black cat, faux eyeball candy, or stand-out haunted houses, dive in for a splash of pagan merriment.
